Hybrid Barndominium Shells in Tyler, TX

More Than a Shell. It's the Foundation of Everything That Comes Next.

A barndominium shell is much more than steel, roofing, and siding. It is the structural foundation that determines how your home will perform for decades to come.

At Iron King Construction, we believe the shell is one of the most important investments you’ll make during your build. While many shell packages are designed to be built as quickly and economically as possible, our Hybrid Shell was designed with long-term residential living in mind.

After years of constructing custom homes, steel buildings, and ultimately designing and building our own family Barndominium home, we recognized several common shortcomings in traditional barndominium construction. We knew there had to be a better way.

Our solution became the Hybrid Shell—a building system that combines the unmatched strength of welded red-iron steel with conventional wood framing techniques to create a shell that is stronger, more energy efficient, easier to finish, and built specifically for residential living.

This isn’t a kit. It isn’t a pre-engineered package assembled from generic components. Every Hybrid Shell is custom built on your property by the builder and his crew, one project at a time. While many traditional shells can be erected in just a few days, our Hybrid Shells are intentionally built with greater care and attention to detail, typically taking around eight weeks to complete. This approach ensures you receive a structure designed around your floor plan, your land, and your family’s future.

What Is Included in a Shell Package

When choosing a hybrid barndominium shell, homeowners receive the complete exterior structure that defines the look and strength of the building. Iron King Construction supplies and installs the primary elements, leaving the interior customizable for future design.

Shell Components

  • Steel or wood framing for long-lasting support
  • Exterior siding and roofing materials
  • Installed doors and windows for secure closure
  • Finished exterior trim work

This approach allows flexibility, making the shell a cost-effective way to begin building without committing to every detail upfront.

Customization Possibilities

While a barndominium shell focuses primarily on the exterior and framework, customization is still possible during construction. Clients can choose roof pitches, siding styles, and window placements that match their vision. Iron King Construction also ensures that the shell is designed to handle any future interior upgrades, whether it’s open floor plans, loft-style living, or specialized room layouts.

Options to Consider

  • Different siding and roofing finishes to match aesthetic preferences
  • Window placements for natural light and ventilation
  • Porch additions to expand usable outdoor space

A Stronger Foundation From the Ground Up

One of the most overlooked differences in barndominium construction is what lies beneath the structure—the concrete foundation. Many builders rely on minimal footers and simplified slab designs intended to reduce upfront costs and speed up construction. While this approach may work for basic structures, it often falls short when applied to a home meant for long-term residential living.

At Iron King Construction, we take a different approach. Our foundations are designed with the same level of care and intention as the rest of the Hybrid Shell. We focus on proper footing depth, reinforcement, and overall slab integrity to ensure your home has a stable, long-lasting base. This not only supports the structural steel frame more effectively but also helps reduce the risk of settling, cracking, and future structural issues.

Because your foundation is something you’ll never see once the home is complete, it’s easy to overlook—but it’s one of the most critical components of the entire build. We believe it should never be treated as a place to cut corners.
